If your service pages include an explainer, testimonial or walkthrough video, video schema markup tells Google what that video is, who made it and how people engage with it. The Search Engine Roundtable October report notes Google has updated its video structured data, adding a creator property and revising interactionStatistic. Here's how to use it on a business website.

What video schema markup does

Structured data (VideoObject, in JSON-LD) gives search engines clean facts: title, description, thumbnail, upload date, duration and now creator. It helps your video qualify for video-rich results and makes it easier for AI search features to understand the page.

Do this: Pick your three most important service pages that already contain a video and add VideoObject markup to each.

Fill in the fields that matter

Required and recommended fields include name, description, thumbnailUrl and uploadDate, plus duration and contentUrl or embedUrl. Add creator to credit your brand or presenter. Only include view or like counts if you can keep them accurate.

Do this: Use real, specific titles and descriptions, and a thumbnail at a stable URL that Google can crawl.

Make sure the video is actually on the page

Markup must match what visitors see. Hidden videos or markup for videos that aren't on the page can be ignored or treated as spam. Embed the video visibly, ideally near the top of the relevant section, with supporting text around it.

Do this: Add a short summary and a transcript below the video so the page reads well even without playing it.

Test, then monitor

Validate with Google's Rich Results Test, then watch the video enhancements report in Search Console for errors. This also supports being understood by AI agents, as covered in our post on making your website ready for AI agents.

Do this: Re-test after every site redesign or plugin update, since templates often strip structured data.

The bottom line

Video schema is a small technical job with a clear payoff in visibility. Add it to your key pages, keep it accurate, and check it regularly.
