Marketplaces bring demand, but you rent that demand. Fees, penalties and algorithm changes can shift your margins overnight, and you never own the customer. A D2C website is the counterweight: it won't replace Amazon or Flipkart, but it gives you something marketplaces can't, which is a direct relationship with your buyers.
What a D2C website gives you that marketplaces don't
You keep the full margin (minus payment fees), the customer's contact details for repeat sales, and complete control of brand, pricing and bundles. Marketplace sellers are also exposed to rule changes, as we saw in our post on Amazon and Flipkart seller penalties.
Do this: Work out your effective margin per order on each marketplace after commission, returns and ads, then compare it with what a direct order would leave you.
Start with your best products, not your whole catalogue
Launch with hero products and bundles you can't easily compare on marketplace listings. Exclusive combos, bigger packs and free gifts give buyers a reason to order direct.
Do this: Pick five products and create one bundle or exclusive offer for your own store only.
Build for how shoppers will find you
Direct traffic doesn't appear by itself. Product pages need clear titles, good images, reviews and structured data so Google and AI shopping tools can read them; our guide to getting products found by AI shopping agents shows what that involves.
Do this: Give each product page a unique description, real reviews and Product schema, rather than copying marketplace text.
Use marketplaces to feed your store, carefully
Add a packaging insert inviting repeat buyers to reorder direct with a small perk. Follow each platform's rules on contacting customers and don't try to redirect buyers inside the marketplace.
Do this: Add a QR-code insert to every parcel pointing to a reorder page with a first-direct-order offer.
The bottom line
Marketplaces are a sales channel; your website is an asset. Build the asset gradually, starting with your strongest products, and you reduce dependency without giving up the sales you already have.
